Biography

With over 13 years of experience in sports tourism, Joey Jewell is a seasoned leader in event development, destination marketing, and strategic sports initiatives. His career began with the Harris County – Houston Sports Authority, where he gained invaluable experience in sports event management and tourism strategy.

Joey then spent 7.5 years with the Eugene, Cascades & Coast Sports Commission, playing a key role in bringing major sporting events to Oregon and strengthening the region’s reputation as a premier sports destination. Most recently, he spearheaded the creation of the Corpus Christi Sports Commission in Texas, where he led efforts to position the city as a competitive sports tourism hub.

Now returning to Oregon, Joey serves as the Chief Sports Officer for Travel Salem and the Executive Director of the Salem Area Sports Commission, where he is focused on elevating the region’s profile as Oregon’s Sports Capital by attracting high-caliber events and fostering sports-driven economic growth.

Throughout his career, Joey has worked on numerous high-profile events, including the U.S. Olympic Trials – Track & Field, World Athletics’ Oregon 22, NCAA Championships – Track & Field, U.S. Masters National Swim Meet, IBC Youth Nationals, and the ITTF Pan American Cup. His expertise in sports tourism and event management continues to drive growth and opportunity in the industry.
